Jonny Evans has expressed his confidence in Andre Onana’s potential to thrive at Manchester United, even in the face of a challenging beginning at the club.
Onana, at 27 years old, made the move from Ajax to Old Trafford during the summer in a transfer valued at £47.2 million, reuniting with his former manager, Erik ten Hag.
Nevertheless, Onana has encountered a challenging start while wearing the red jersey, managing just one clean sheet in his initial six appearances for the team.
Evans, who returned to United during the summer on a free transfer, has offered his support and believes that Onana will ultimately excel at the club, despite the initial difficulties.
“It’s a big thing for him to do that,” Evans said to TNT Sports. “He didn’t have to do that. But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.”
“I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself. He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time.”
“Again, remember, David, at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”
In his most recent appearance for United, Onana took the field at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Unfortunately, it was a match in which the Cameroonian international allowed four goals, including a shot from Leroy Sane for the opening goal, a save he typically expects to make.
It’s an evening he will probably want to put behind him as he continues his journey with the club.
The goalkeeper will have another opportunity to showcase his abilities this weekend as the Red Devils make the short 35-mile journey to take on Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side.
