French forward Kylian Mbappe made an impressive debut for Real Madrid, scoring in their 2-0 victory over Atalanta to secure the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Poland.
Federico Valverde put Real Madrid ahead with a close-range goal in the 59th minute, and Mbappe extended their lead with a stunning strike into the top corner from a pass by Jude Bellingham nine minutes later.
With this win, Real Madrid has now claimed a record sixth Super Cup title, surpassing Barcelona and AC Milan, who have each won the trophy five times.
Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in June, almost scored in the 15th minute but had his shot blocked by Atalanta’s defense.
Atalanta, making their Super Cup debut after winning the Europa League, were not intimidated by their prestigious opponents. Despite Real Madrid’s early dominance, Atalanta grew more confident, with Marten de Roon hitting the crossbar with a deflected shot.
The Italian side continued to create opportunities, with Ederson narrowly missing from long range and Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois making a crucial save from Ademola Lookman.
Rodrygo missed a golden chance for Real Madrid just before halftime, hitting the bar with a low shot from Vinicius Jr.’s pass. Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic also tested Courtois with a header, but the Belgian goalkeeper made a superb save.
The breakthrough came when Valverde finished a precise pass from Vinicius. Real Madrid could have extended their lead through Vinicius and Bellingham, but it was Mbappe who sealed the victory with a neat finish after Bellingham set him up.
The 25-year-old, who has won seven Ligue 1 titles with PSG and Monaco but had not previously claimed a European club trophy, was substituted seven minutes before the end of the match.
