Out-of-favor Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has finalised his loan move to West Ham, aiming to secure regular playing time.
The 28-year-old England international, who joined City from his childhood club Leeds in the summer of 2022 for £42 million ($53 million), enjoyed a successful debut season with the club, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup as part of a Treble-winning team.
Despite his initial achievements, Phillips struggled to convince manager Pep Guardiola of his value, starting only two Premier League games in the 2022–23 season and accumulating a mere 89 minutes of top-flight football this season.
Now, he looks to rejuvenate his career under David Moyes at the London Stadium.
Phillips, who will wear the No. 11 shirt at his new club, has told West Ham’s official website of taking on a new challenge in the English capital: “I’m really pleased to be here. There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now. There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the club, and I can’t wait to be part of it.
“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”
The agreement between West Ham and Phillips does not incorporate an option for a permanent transfer, indicating that there are no plans for a permanent move at this juncture.
Nevertheless, Phillips has the opportunity to showcase his skills and will be determined to remain in consideration for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.
