Ghana assistant coach urges players to fight for starting spots ahead of AWCON 2018

Ghana assistant coach Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo says there are no guaranteed starting spots for any member of the team ahead of their opening game of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The Black Queens, hosts of the 11th edition of the flagship continental women tournament, are set to open their campaign against Algeria at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Bashir Hayford’s outfit are hoping to lay hands on the title for the first time ever, having thrice finished as runners-up.

There are no automatic places for any member of the team,” Quarcoo said, as reported by Ghanasoccernet.

“We are preparing a team that we believe is capable of winning the tournament, and we will not dwell on past glory.

“What we see in training is what will inform our decision for the first team.

“Every player is fighting for her position, whether you play in Ghana or outside the country.”

Ghana will take on Mali in their next game on November 20 before wrapping up the group series three days later.
