Hannes Strydom, a former rugby player for the Springboks, passed away. He was on the team that won South Africa’s first Rugby World Cup in 1995.
Strydom passed away in a car crash in Mpumalanga province on Sunday night.
He was 58 years old.
Kobus Wiese, a former teammate of Strydom from the Springboks, told News 24 that Strydom was in a car with one other person when it crashed into a taxi.
He is the fifth person from the 1995 Springboks team to have passed away.
The team won the World Cup at Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg. They beat the All Blacks from New Zealand with a score of 15-12.
The game was the first big sports event in South Africa after apartheid. It was a important moment for the country because it helped bring people together. President Nelson Mandela supported racial unity with the slogan “One Team, One Country. ”
