An incident occurred at the University of Ghana involving some volunteers who participated in the recently concluded 2023 African Games and personnel from the Ghana Police Service.
Tensions arose when the police officers attempted to evacuate the volunteers from the Pentagon hostel after the conclusion of the games.
The volunteers, who had provided their services to ensure the smooth running of the event, insisted on receiving their allowances before leaving the hostel to return home.
However, their demands were met with resistance as police officers were deployed to remove them from the premises. What started as an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully quickly turned into a confrontation as the volunteers adamantly refused to vacate the hostel.
According to witnesses, amidst the commotion, a police officer fired a shot in an effort to disperse the crowd. Instead of dispersing, the volunteers reacted by advancing towards the officer.
The incident involved over one thousand volunteers who had been hired by the government to assist with the organization of the 2023 African Games, which took place in Accra from March 3 to March 23, 2024.
