Police clash with protestors at Koforidua-Nkurakan

A standoff has erupted between the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service and residents of Ada, Magazine, Aboabo, Wawase, and Nkurakan.

The conflict began when community members blocked the main Koforidua-Nkurakan road in protest of its deteriorating condition.

On Thursday morning, clad in red and black, residents took to the streets, obstructing traffic with tires, logs, and wooden boxes, which left many commuters stranded as public transport was disrupted along this vital route.

The protesters expressed their outrage over the road’s safety, highlighting that over ten individuals, including a student and motorcycle riders, have tragically lost their lives in accidents that could have been avoided if the road conditions were better.

Leading the demonstration were four assembly members from Ada, Aboabo, Magazine, and Nkurakan, alongside Nana Asiedu Oduro, the chief of Adukrom Akwadum.

They have issued a two-week ultimatum to the government, demanding the contractor return to finish the project or face significant consequences.

“Construction began on this road in 2019 and it is still not completed and so we are on the streets demonstrating because we are suffering and we give the contractor and the government two weeks to come to our aid because this is a major road.”
