Party Militia Disbandment: NDC cannot dictate to Akufo-Addo on what to do – MP

NPP Member of Parliament [MP] for Nhyiaeso constituency in Kumasi, Kennedy Kwasi Kankam says members of the largest opposition NDC party cannot direct or dictate to the President or the government on what should be done to curb political violence.

According to him, the letter written to the President by Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo after his pronouncement to disband vigilante groups through dialogue between the two political parties [NDC and NPP] was unnecessary and uncalled-for.

“I say this because a date of the said meeting have not yet been put across but you [NDC] have read into the meeting wanting to decide for the President on what to do,” he said.

“They [NDC] should know that the President knows how to go about the issue, therefore his statement to introduce laws to disband party militias should the dialogue fail. NDC should stop behaving as knowing the best way to curb the problem when they did nothing about it when they were in government,” he added.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed dismay over a letter by the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo requesting mediators and facilitators of the dialogue between the two major political parties in the country.

It could be recalled that the President in his State of the Nation Address at Parliament this year urged both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition NDC to hold a meeting towards the disbandment of vigilante groups.

President Nana Akufo-Addo noted with concern the dangers that vigilante groups pose to the lives of Ghanaians following their attacks by them since the inception of the government and so believes the two main political parties can help dissolve the groups.

The groups are said to owe allegiance to either the NPP or NDC and at their behest have been terrorizing people in the country.
