Jersey numbers don’t guarantee success – Kwadwo Asamoah’s father

Father of Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah, Agya Asamoah has stated that jersey numbers do not determine player’s performance with a team following reports that his son went on hibernation because of the Black Stars number 10 jersey.

Asamoah decided against wearing the iconic jersey number 10 again few weeks to the start of 2012 Africa Cup of Nations tournament and reverted to his favourite number 20.

The 29-year-old first wore the number 10 jersey at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in the absence of then captain Stephen Appiah and it became his preferred number after Appiah announced his retirement from international football in 2010.

Last month, the Inter Milan midfielder expatiated on reasons behind his decision to drop the shirt because he prefers wearing number 20.

“I’ve heard stories about the No 10 jersey as one of the reasons my son didn’t want to return to play for Ghana. Let me put it on record that jerseys and jersey numbers don’t determine a player’s performance,” Agya Asamoah told Sikka FM.
