Invest in websites – IT lecturer tells artistes

A Lecturer at the faculty of Information Technology and Communications Studies at the University of Professional Studies-Accra (UPSA), Mr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, has urged Ghanaian musicians to invest in websites and stop the over reliance on social media to promote their works.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram among others have now become the popular tools artistes across the world use to promote their craft and personal brands.

However, Mr Ayiku said in an interview with the Daily Graphic that relying solely on social media platforms deprived musicians of the control and authenticity that they should have over the works they produced.

According to him, websites could serve as a reference point or a credible source of information for fans of the artistes to authenticate issues, particularly in this era where fake news is rife.

“It’s a one-stop shop of everything about you, your music, your career and where we can buy your music. Where we can contact you, and your events.

“We should start thinking about where our Ghanaian artistes will be in December and start selling tickets today. Fans of these artistes must start planning today.

“If an artiste is travelling to South Africa or any other country outside Ghana, by now, we should know. That is how you build a global fan base”, he said.

Mr Ayiku added that social media platforms easily became obsolete with time and advancements in new technology as compared to websites.
