Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for challenging John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, to an economic debate.
Dr. Bawumia recently issued this challenge during a rally in the Northern region, questioning the substance of Mahama’s economic policies, particularly criticizing the proposed 24-hour policy.
In response, Adongo dismissed Bawumia’s challenge as lacking credibility, arguing that the Vice President fails to offer new policies and instead attributes economic challenges to external factors like the Russia-Ukraine conflict and COVID-19.
Adongo suggested that Bawumia’s call for a debate is an attempt to leverage Mahama’s popularity to boost his own political standing, rather than presenting substantive economic solutions.
Regarding the debate, John Mahama’s campaign team has indicated a reluctance to participate, signaling a stance against engaging in a presidential debate with Dr. Bawumia.
“You have nothing substantial to contribute to any debate, except to provide us with pseudo-scientific explanations for COVID and the history of the Ukraine-Russia relationship! We do not want to hear any more excuses about COVID and Ukraine! Let’s focus and be serious, okay.
“You cannot rely on JM’s reputation to revive your floundering political career, characterized by failed economic management, debt distress, an insolvent Bank of Ghana, a significant depreciation of the Cedi, a cost of living crisis, and fiscal challenges,” he asserted.
