Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani funeral ends today after massive display of culture

The final rites will be taking place later this morning, to bring an end to the funeral of the late Dagbon overlord, Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II.

Thursday saw the Kampakoya Naa, the regent, circumambulate the Naa Gbewaa palace in the presence of thousands of mourners, a delegation from government and a delegation from the Asantehene.

Hundreds of sub-chiefs also paid homage to the regent amidst drumming and dancing and firing of muskets.

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, was the key member of government at the occasion, which was the second vibrant display of culture in the last month following the funeral of the late Yaa-Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV in Yendi.

On Friday evening, there is expected to be the selection and enskinment of a new Yaa Naa by elders of Dagbon.

Nana Baffour Asabere Kugyawoaso Ababio III led the Asanteman delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Na Abdulai Yakubu Andani at the Gbewa Palace earlier on Thursday.

The Asante chiefs performed their cultural and customary dance at the forecourt of the Old Gbewa Palace, as part of the funeral.

The Asanteman delegation graced the occasion just as they did during the funeral rites ceremony of the late Overlord Ya Na Mahamudu Abdulai which was performed by the Abudu royal family of Dagbon a few weeks ago.

The Minority in Parliament was also represented, led by its Chief Whip, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.

He was accompanied by the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini; MP for Zabzugu, Alhassan Abaako among others.

Arguably, the highlight of the day was the triumphant entry by the chief warrior of Dagbon, Kumbun Naa Alhaji Iddi.

The warrior started his journey from Kumbungu on Monday to Tamale where he spent the night and proceeded to Mion and spent two nights there before arriving in Yendi on Thursday.

The Kumbun Naa also travelled with an active beehive, also known as Logu, which is the symbol of his weapon.

This historic commute of the Kumbun Naa was last experienced in 1974 during the funeral of the father of the late Yaa-Naa Naa Andani.
