Road accidents: 1,369 killed in 7 months, 157 perish in July

The rate of accidents and the number of casualties have increased in July 2018, compared to the same month last year.

The number of people killed has risen to 157, as against the 149 killed in July 2017, representing a 5.3% increase.

This brings the number of commuters killed between January and July 2018 to 1,369.

This means the figure went up by 13.33%, from 1,208 killed in the first seven months of last year.

The July fatalities comprised 124 males and 33 females.

The number of commuters injured in July 2018 witnessed a 6.6% rise, from 872 in 2017 to 930 in 2018.

However, the number of pedestrian knockdowns dropped from 268 in July last year to 227 in the same month of 2018, representing 15.2% decrease

The number of motorcycles involved in accidents marginally went up by 0.7%, from 261 in 2017 to 263 in 2018.

Similarly, the total number of private vehicles involved in road traffic accidents also shot up by 18.7% i.e., from 728 this year compared to 613 in July last year.

The total number of commercial vehicles involved also registered a 9% drop from 622 in July 2017 to 566 this year.

The reported cases rose from 971 in July last year to 1,011 in the same month this year, representing a four percent increase.

According to the figures, a total number of vehicles involved in accidents also went up by 61% i.e., 1,496 in 2017 July to 1,557 in July 2018.

The number of persons injured in road crashes between January and July this year registered 11.05% jump from 6,869 recorded in the first seven months of 2017 to 7,628 in the same period in 2018.

Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and verified by the National Road Safety Commission (NSRC) shows that the number of pedestrians knocked down went down by 5.24% from 1,948 last year to 1,846 this year.

The total number of motor vehicles involved in accidents witnessed 14.31% increase between January and July 2017 from 11,032 to 12,611 in the 7-month period under consideration.

The number of commercial vehicles involved rose from 4,462 between January and July last year to 4,909 within the same period this year, representing 10.02% spike.

18.76% spike in private vehicles involved in accidents

Similarly, the number of private vehicles also increased from 4,633 in the first seven months of 2017 to 5,502 during the same period in 2018. This represents an 18.76% increase.

The data shows that the number of motorcycles involved in accidents also rose from 1,937 during the period last year to 2,200 in 2018.

The motorcycles involved in accidents went up by 13.58% in January 2018.
