Punctuality is a mark of discipline – VRA CEO

Mr Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority, has urged Ghanaians to be responsive to time to increase productivity, saying ‘being punctual is a mark of discipline’.

“The act of being punctual strengthens and reveals one’s integrity and dependability. It builds self-confidence and shows respect for others,” he added.

Mr Antwi-Adarkwa made the call in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Bernard Kofi Ellis, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, in charge of Services, VRA, at a ceremony in Accra to endorse the punctuality campaign initiated by the Punctuality Ghana Foundation, a Civil Society Organisation.

The campaign is aimed at promoting punctuality in all spheres of engagement among Ghanaians to ensure a high level of productivity.

Mr Ellis, and the leadership of Punctuality Ghana Foundation signed the pledge form to be enforcers of the punctuality movement at the workplace.

The Senior Staff Association and the Union Association of VRA have pledged their support to promote Punctuality at work.

Mr Antwi-Adarkwa said the campaign was in line with the values of the company-integrity, teamwork, trust, commitment and accountability.

He said punctuality shows that an individual can organize his or her time and pay attention to details.

He said the Authority since its establishment in 1961 had discharged its mandate as the market leader in power generation but was plagued with challenges resulting in weak financial position, low asset utilisation and high operating cost.

As a result, he said the Authority in 2018 instituted a broad strategy to restructure the company into a resilient, sustainable and growing entity that provided public service with a private sector mindset as well transform into a multi-business holding company in the market.

Mr Antwi-Adarkwa urged all to do well to put up with better attitudes to facilitate organizational, personal and national development.

Mr Emmanuel Amarquaye, the Punctuality Crusader, said measuring punctuality in the light of productivity, growth, increase in government revenue, minimizing corruption and making the country attractive were the basic mandates of the foundation.

He urged both the participants to respect time as the essence of productivity and development and commended the VRA for their participation and willingness to support the campaign.

He said others, who have signed onto the campaign are the Speaker of Parliament, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Ministers of State, the Mayor of Accra and the President of Ghana Journalists Association, among others.
