General Secretary of Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has defended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to reshuffle his ministers just ten months before the upcoming general election.
Frimpong contends that despite criticisms suggesting the reshuffle came too late to have any significant impact in an election year, the move still holds value.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on February 14th, Frimpong addressed the timing of the reshuffle, stating, “In political life, 10 months is a long period.”
He cited examples of swift achievements by past appointees shortly after their appointments, highlighting the importance of evaluating the vision and innovations brought forth by the new appointees.
Frimpong urged Ghanaians to closely monitor the performance of the newly appointed ministers in President Akufo-Addo‘s administration, emphasizing that their actions and outcomes will be crucial factors in assessing their effectiveness.
He maintained that the timeframe leading up to the December 7th elections is sufficient to gauge the impact of the reshuffle and determine whether the new appointees have delivered on their mandates.
The General Secretary also addressed his previous call for a reshuffle, which he made on December 22nd during the party’s annual Thanksgiving Service. Despite the delay in action by President Akufo-Addo, Frimpong expressed satisfaction with the timing of the reshuffle, stating that the President acted appropriately amidst prevailing challenges.
He likened the situation to navigating a crisis, emphasizing the importance of waiting for the right moment to make changes for the betterment of the country.
Frimpong reassured the public that it was not too late for the reshuffle, asserting that ten months provided ample time for the newly appointed ministers to demonstrate their competence and contribute positively to the government’s agenda.
President Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle, announced on February 14th, saw nine appointees reassigned, with the most notable change being the reassignment of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. The reshuffle comes amid heightened political activity as Ghana prepares for the general election scheduled for December 7th.
