NDC Council of Elders express disgust at brutality

The Council of Elders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed disgust at the unprovoked brutality unleased on supporters of the party at the residence of the parliamentary candidate of the party, Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong, in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

“The NDC is horrified by the unprovoked brutality unleashed by the operatives of the National Security on NDC supporters at the residence of the NDC parliamentary candidate during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election held on January 31, 2019,” a statement signed and issued by the Vice-Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, said.

Blaming the NDC?

The statement added that the council was equally scandalised by attempts to blame the NDC for the mayhem, saying that it defied logic and common sense.

It asked: “How could the NDC unleash such savagery on its own candidate and supporters?

According to the party, brutalities of that nature devalued the image of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and bastardised his commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

“They post definite threat to the nation and its fledging democracy and lay the foundation for mayhem in future elections. They undermine investor confidence that would lead to economic stagnation,” the statement said.

Rein them in

The Council of Elders of the NDC, therefore, called on President Akufo-Addo to rein in and disband vigilante groups as a matter of extreme urgency and to do everything in his power to preserve peace in the nation.

“The President must allow the established security services of the nation to do their professional work,” it said.

It also called on the IGP to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and redeem the image of the Police by ensuring maximum punishment for those involved.
