Ghanaian doctor saves ‘dying’ womans life on board KLM flight

A Ghanaian doctor with the Police Hospital in Accra and a German doctor, on Saturday December 8 saved the life of a sick woman on board a KLM passenger plane.

The KLM flight, KL 0589 travelling from Amsterdam to Accra had to be delayed for almost two hours at Schipol Airport to make way for the two medical doctors to revive the Ghanaian woman who collapsed on board the flight due to severe abdominal pains.

The doctors, Chief Superintendent Dr. Samuel Ofori and Dr. Prof. Manfred Spitznas worked together to save the life of the “dying” woman.

Executive Director of the Africa Center for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), William Nyarko, who was on board the flight recounted the ordeal passengers had to go through as a result of the bad weather in Amsterdam and bleeding from another traveller.

According to him, by the time the traveller who was suffering from bleeding was taken care of and the weather cleared up, passengers had been grounded for nearly three hours on the tarmac.

He described the journey as “the most stressful and eventful flight” he had encountered.

Mr. Nyarko further commended the two doctors for saving the life of the passenger, adding “once a life was saved all our discomfort paled into insignificance”.

He also commended the captain of the flight Marcel Veusteeof and Ann Boumal, and the leader of the cabin crew for the professional manner in which they handled the situations.
