Six persons died on the spot and 12 others injured Tuesday when a mini passenger vehicle rammed into a broken down tipper truck at Beahu near Apowa in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.
According to the Police, the shaft of the truck fell off from its position onto the road but the driver managed to control the steering and parked by the side of the road to pick up the broken shaft.
However, the mini bus, which was said to be speeding, drove straight into the shaft before it could be removed from the road. This caused the bus to ram into the rear of the tipper truck registered GT 6620 B.
Police say six persons three women and a child plus two men onboard the mini bus registered 1607-18, died on the spot while six others including the bus driver were rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital.
Another set of six passengers, which the Police say included a baby who were also rushed to the Hospital for various injuries, are responding to treatment.
Youth from the communities near where the accident occurred at about 3:00pm, assisted the police in removing the injured and the dead.
The accident caused gridlock on the road but the police managed to clear it for vehicular movement.
