Ghana’s Football troubles started in 2014 -Afriyie Ankrah

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has voiced concerns over the declining state of sports in Ghana, which has sparked growing public unease.

He attributed the disorganisation within the sports sector to the underperformance of national teams in recent competitions.

According to Afriyie Ankrah, the problems plaguing Ghanaian football, particularly the Black Stars, stem from mismanagement that dates back to 2014.

Speaking to Oyerepa FM, he emphasised the urgent need for decisive action from authorities to restore and rejuvenate football in the country.

“The state of sports is in shambles. I’m not the one saying it; don’t you know? It may be hard to believe, especially with football, but the roots of the problem started in 2014,” he said in Twi when asked about the current state of sports in the country.

The poor performance of various teams and athletes has raised concerns about the management of sports in Ghana.

The Black Stars have struggled to maintain consistent performance, failing to secure a win in two matches for the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The athletics team also failed to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, adding to the woes of Ghanaian sports.

It remains to be seen how various sporting agencies will respond to restore the former glory of Ghanaian sports.
