Atta Mills was a man who epitomized truth and honesty – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has honored his late former boss, President John Evans Atta Mills, with a heartfelt tribute.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 24, marking the 12th anniversary of President Mills’ passing, Mahama lauded him as a true nation-builder who prioritized unity and the nation’s well-being over personal or political interests.

Mahama, who served as Vice President under Mills, highlighted the former President’s integrity and dedication.

He recalled that Mills was the first to voluntarily reduce his own salary to demonstrate solidarity with the economic struggles faced by Ghanaians when they assumed office in 2009, succeeding the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“My boss, President John Evans Atta Mills, was a selfless leader. He prioritised the needs of the nation over personal and political gain. When he took over from the NPP government, he was the first to cut his own salary as a sincere gesture to show solidarity with the economic hardships faced by many Ghanaians.

“He was passionate about lifting the vulnerable and duly allocated resources to social welfare programmes. He was a man who epitomised truth and honesty.

“From his life in Academia to his time as the IRS Commissioner, to becoming Vice President.

And throughout his presidency, he lived as he preached—transparently! His reputation for integrity was widespread nationally and internationally. Forever in our hearts, Professor Mills,” he wrote.
