4 Telcos connect to Kelni platform; IMANI boss angry

At least four telecom companies have connected to the controversial Kelni GVG common monitoring platform.

Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone, Yolanda Cuba revealed this at a media roundtable for editors and morning show hosts, Tuesday.

She was quick to add though that no call traffic has been monitored yet because of the pending cases in court.

It is not clear yet which of the companies have connected to the platform.

Her comments come after the government issued an 11-day ultimatum for the telecom companies to connect to the Kelni-GVG platform.

Government signed the $89 million contract with Kelni in December 2017 as part of a revenue monitoring and assurance regime.

Civil Society organization, including IMANI Africa had raised objections to the contract.

Some three citizens have sued the government over a contract they say is not in the interest of the country.

The Telcos were also initially dragging their feet in connecting to the Kelni platform having raised issues about a potential breach of privacy.

But Yolanda Cuba said government has partly resolved the privacy issues.

There is a filter that is being proposed and discussed. That process is ongoing now. The filter takes care of some of the concerns that the telcos initially raised.

She admitted that the privacy issues have not been addressed completely but added “I am 95% comfortable with the process.”

President of IMANI Africa Franklin Cudjoe, whose outfit has been vociferous in its opposition to the contract told Joy News the decision by the telcos to connect to Kelni GVG platform while is illegal.

According to him, when the case is pending in court the companies had no business connecting to the platform at least after the case pending before court is determined.

In the midst of the controversy, Member of Parliament for Kumbungu is asking the house to probe the controversial Kelni/GVG call traffic motoring contract.

Ras Mubarak said he has the blessing of the Minority to push through the motion because the Communications Minister Ursula Owusu did not provide adequate information when she appeared on the floor.

He is hoping to move the motion on the floor in the next few days for a debate.
